Welcome to Trish Polis Swim School

—I am proud to introduce you to my Swim School in Port Elizabeth, which has the reputation for producing excellent swimmers with a distinctive stroke and style developed in every swimmer from novice to advanced.

—My program gradually nurtures young swimmers into becoming strong capable swimmers. The program will develop not only the fun and safety aspects of swimming but also the knowledge that the benefits  will contribute to an ongoing healthier  and fitter lifestyle.

—Each group of learners is taught swimming, listening and social development skills in a clean heated pool throughout the year. Pupils mix with other children, learn many skills in space sharing and developing an affinity with the water that will remain with them throughout their lives. Pupils are regularly assessed and placed in classes with children of the same level.

—I know swimming is one of the most important skills you can offer your child. I have been given this opportunity to introduce you to my Swim School which could become part of your child’s education.

— I urge all parents to give their children the opportunity to learn this skill professionally.

Information

—Drowning is listed as one of the top causes of unnatural death amongst children in South Africa. At the same time, these unfortunate events are very preventable.

—It is fast becoming one of those topics where someone you know, or someone in your group of friends or family, knows of an incident of accidental drowning occurring amongst them.

—Although the death statistics with regards to drowning are shocking, the consequences of near-drowning are even more so. For every child that dies from drowning, five suffer from permanent brain damage as a result of a near-drowning. It takes only four minutes without oxygen for irreversible brain damage to occur.

—But swimming pools, even those where permanent lifeguards are on duty, are not the only places where children can easily drown. 90% of children who drown are under some sort of supervision at the time.

—Coastal incidents seem to be involving the age group of 10 to 18 year-olds more predominantly whilst, inland, the greatest number of incidents involve the 2 to 8 year-old age bracket.

—This proves that, in spite of good intentions, no parent is able to protect their child from drowning by ‘keeping an eye open’. It is irresponsible of parents to not do all they possibly can to keep their children safe.

—What would a tragedy of drowning do to what’s most precious to you and your family

—Education plays a vital role in ensuring that children are aware of the risks involved when in close vicinity of these bodies of water, and how to assist were an incident to occur.
